Can You Feel It – How Dance Music Conquered The World (BBC4)

BBC4 has an fine pedigree for music documentaries, it looks like they’ve done it again with their latest on the origins of dance music.  The new series charts “the story of the dance revolution – the beat, the clubs and the DJs that changed music culture forever”. We’ve only seen the first episode, and it certainly contains some brand new nuggets, including the origin of the “four to the floor beat”. The documentary also covers the through line from 70s disco to 80s house & techno in Chicago & Detroit. They have interviews with all the key players including, (to name a few): Marshall Jefferson, Steve “Silk” Hurley, Kevin Saunderson and archive of Frankie Knuckles.  It’s a bracing watch alright, and well worth checking out.   The next 2 episodes cover clubs and DJs, and we’ll be interested to see how “EDM” is tackled (we don’t like to hate at Funkdub, but….!).

Check out the trailer, and the first episode.
